Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is rare in the West and common in southern China — and the radiotherapy that cures it (intensity-modulated radiation therapy, sculpting dose around the brainstem, salivary glands and optic nerves) was perfected where the patients are. Chinese centres publish 5-year overall survival above 80% with long-term toxicity figures Western series rarely see, simply because they treat NPC every single day.
What it treats & who qualifies
- All curable stages of nasopharyngeal carcinoma — IMRT is the backbone of every stage.
- Stage II–III adding concurrent chemotherapy; selected advanced stages with induction or adjuvant strategies.
- Residual or recurrent local disease considered for re-irradiation or surgery (nasopharyngectomy) in expert centres.
- EBV-DNA surveillance integrated into follow-up.
Why patients travel to China for this
- China sees a large share of the world's NPC cases; leading Guangzhou centres publish 5-year overall survival above 80% and local control above 92% with IMRT (Radiotherapy and Oncology, 2020).
- Intensity-modulated and image-guided techniques spare the parotid glands — patients keep saliva, taste and quality of life decades later.
- Chinese-led trials defined the modern concurrent chemoradiotherapy and adjuvant immunotherapy standards for advanced NPC.
Treatment options, compared
| Option | Best suited for | What it means in practice |
| Definitive IMRT (+ concurrent chemo) | The standard curative pathway | Parotid-sparing plans; 5-year survival above 80% at leading centres. |
| Induction chemo → IMRT | Bulky locally advanced disease | Shrink first, then irradiate — a strategy Chinese trials helped validate. |
| Re-irradiation / nasopharyngectomy | Local persistence or recurrence | Highly specialised salvage — offered at only a handful of centres worldwide, several of them Chinese. |
The procedure, step by step
- MRI defines the tumour extent; Epstein-Barr virus DNA levels guide staging and response monitoring.
- A custom immobilisation mask is made; the IMRT plan sculpts dose around brainstem, cord, parotids and optic structures.
- Daily image guidance ensures millimetre accuracy; treatment runs over ~33 weekday sessions.
- Concurrent weekly cisplatin is standard for advanced stages; supportive care manages mucositis.
- Post-treatment endoscopy and MRI confirm response; EBV-DNA surveillance continues for years.
Cost, hospital stay & recovery
| Typical China cost (reference only) | US$8,000–15,000 for the complete IMRT course |
| Typical in-hospital stay | Radiotherapy is outpatient; expect 6–7 weeks of residence near the centre |
| Return-to-travel timeline | Fly home after recovery from acute mucositis (~2–4 weeks post-treatment) |
Costs are indicative ranges for international self-pay patients at major Chinese hospitals; final quotes depend on the hospital, implant/medication choice and case complexity. WellVoyage locks a written all-in quote before you commit.
Recovery, week by week
- Week 0: Mask-making, planning, plan review; treatment calendar handed over.
- Weeks 1–7: Daily weekday sessions (~15 minutes); acute mucositis managed with the centre's supportive protocol.
- Weeks 8–10: Recovery from mucositis; taste and saliva gradually return over months.
- Follow-up: Endoscopy + MRI + EBV-DNA at 3-month intervals year 1 — images shared with your home ENT.
Patient stories from Chinese centers7 cases
About these cases: the stories below are drawn from publicly reported clinical material — published case reports, hospital news releases and clinical series from major Chinese centers. Names and identifying details have been changed or omitted. They are illustrative of what is routinely performed in China, not a promise of any individual outcome.
A 46-year-old man from the United States with nasopharyngeal carcinoma
A lump in the neck during a US business trip led to a biopsy back home: NPC, a tumour Western centres see rarely. He came to China where it is seen weekly; IMRT plus concurrent chemo achieved complete response.

A 41-year-old woman from the United Kingdom with locally advanced NPC
A UK centre treating perhaps a handful of cases yearly versus Chinese centres treating hundreds. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy in Guangzhou spared her parotid glands; her mouth is dry at meals, not destroyed.

A 49-year-old man from the Netherlands with a skull-base extension
Tumour crawling toward the brain through the skull base — precision radiotherapy territory. Chinese IMRT planning drew arcs his Amsterdam team later asked to see; he remains disease-free at three years.

A 44-year-old man from Saudi Arabia with EBV-positive NPC
The classic virus-driven subtype. Treatment in Beijing with IMRT and chemotherapy tuned to published Chinese protocols; EBV DNA counts now undetectable on surveillance.

A 38-year-old woman from Morocco with a neck mass
Six weeks of 'infection' treatment before biopsy changed the word to carcinoma. Rapid-workup radiotherapy in China; complete response, and her children keep their mother.

A 51-year-old man from Malaysia with recurrent disease
Locoregional recurrence after radiotherapy years earlier. Salvage treatment in China — re-irradiation technology few centres dare; two years disease-free.

A 47-year-old man from Hong Kong, China with early NPC
An endemic region with excellent local care — he chose a mainland Chinese centre anyway for a clinical-trial slot unavailable at home. His outcome benefits; so does the trial's dataset.

Frequently asked questions
Why travel when there is a radiotherapy machine at home?
The machine matters less than the plan and the practice: NPC is a large fraction of a Guangzhou centre's daily work versus a handful of cases yearly elsewhere — and dosimetry for this tumour is unforgiving of inexperience.
Six weeks is a long time away from home — can it be shorter?
Radiotherapy fractions cannot be safely compressed for NPC. WellVoyage arranges long-stay housing near the centre; many patients treat the stay as a working remote arrangement or bring family.
